Acoustic noise estimation in deep-sea mining
Array processing for locating and quantifying underwater acoustic sources associated with deep-sea mining operations.
Monitoring underwater acoustic noise
Deep-sea mining can generate underwater noise from machines and systems deployed on the seabed. The research addresses the estimation of this noise through three stages: array definition, source localization and source-level estimation.
High-resolution localization
Conventional beamforming was first used for source localization. Because spatial resolution was insufficient in some configurations, higher-resolution approaches, including MUSIC, were investigated together with optimized hydrophone-array designs.
Multiplane deconvolution
A deconvolution method based on CLEAN-SC was adapted to the multiplane setting to suppress surface nuisance sources and improve the localization and power estimation of deep sources.
