Javascript-based medical image viewer development

Context

Targeted Radionuclide Therapy (TRT) is a promising cancer treatment that consists to deliver therapeutic doses of radiation to malignant tumors, for example, by administration of a radio-labeled molecule designed to seek out certain cells. Such types of therapies are studied at the Léon Bérard cancer treatment center in collaboration with CREATIS CNRS research lab (Lyon, France). The treatment workflow is complex with a large number of images (CT scan, MR, nuclear SPECT or PET images), simulations, and analysis for each patient. Moreover, the process involves a lot of interactions between clinicians (nuclear medicines, medical physicists, radiologists, …).

In order to manage this process and help clinicians, we developed a web-based software based on different technologies:

  • a database management software dedicated to nuclear medicine, developed in C++
  • a web framework to display the workflow information to clinicians based on C++, Javascript, HTML and CSS (Bootstrap).
  • a medical image viewer based on a Javascript library (e.g.: AMI - https://github.com/FNNDSC/ami)

Objective

The purpose of this internship is to integrate the javascript-based medical image viewer into the current web framework. The developments should allow users to view medical images from their browsers and trigger some image processing. You will be integrated in a multidisciplinary project team, supervised by an engineer and researchers, in contact with clinicians from the hospital.

Tasks

  • Understand the online image viewer and integrate it into the web framework.
  • Develop additional features: image overlay, fusion and ROI (Region Of Interest),...
  • Enhance the user experience (window/level, manual registration,…).

Required skills

  • Education: computer science engineering student.
  • Scientific interests: medical imaging.
  • Medical software experience, Dicom knowledge are a positive point.
  • Programming skills: C++ and Javascript required
  • Languages: English and/or French

Practical information

  • Supervision: David Sarrut and Thomas Baudier.
  • Location: Centre Léon Bérard, Lyon, France.
  • Period: 2018 (about 6 months).
  • Compensation: about 554€.
  • Send CV and a brief covering letter by email to Thomas Baudier (thomas.baudier@creatis.insa-lyon.fr).
