The CREATIS laboratory received funding through a CNRS (INS2I institute) call for projects to support an outreach initiative focused on research careers, the representation of women in science, and the deconstruction of gender stereotypes in underprivileged educational areas. As part of this initiative, meetings were organized with two primary schools from Vaulx-en-Velin and Villeurbanne: Martin Luther King and Saint-Exupéry.
Researchers from CREATIS visited the schools to present careers in research and highlight the role of women in science. They used educational and playful tools such as magnetic posters and a board game to illustrate the lack of visibility of women in research.
The pupils later visited the laboratory and participated in workshops related to CREATIS imaging techniques and research topics. The workshops covered ultrasound, MRI, CT, optics, and image analysis/artificial intelligence.
The pupils, their teachers, and accompanying parents greatly appreciated these half-day events. CREATIS members (T. Diot, S. Rit, N. Duchateau, J. Puig, P. Muleki-Seya, F. Cervenansky, A. Bernard, T. Bakir, D. Grenier, V. Foëx, L. Mahieu William, A. Gautheron, C. Carreda, A. Denis, J. Landry, B. Nicolas and J-M Letang) also found it rewarding to share their knowledge and experience with the students. This outreach initiative successfully introduced research careers in a fun and accessible way, thanks in particular to the science communication internship of Flora Russier, who played a key role in creating and developing the educational tools used during these visits.
