Abstract:

Estimating myocardial fiber orientation is essential for understanding the structure and function of the heart. This thesis investigates ultrasound imaging as a non-invasive alternative to diffusion tensor MRI, focusing on the spatial coherence of ultrasound signals. Two complementary approaches are proposed to improve conventional Backscatter Tensor Imaging (BTI). The first explores advanced statistical methods, including mutual information and Granger causality, to capture signal dependencies beyond linear correlation. The second investigates deep learning approaches, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and Riemannian neural networks (SPDNet), to estimate fiber orientation from coherence maps or covariance matrices. Experimental results demonstrate improved estimation accuracy compared with the conventional method, highlighting the potential of these approaches for non-invasive characterization of myocardial architecture.
