Agnieszka Gutwinska, Best Poster Award at the 2026 European Molecular Imaging Meeting

2 April 2026

Agnieszka Gutwinska received the Best Poster Award in the pulmonary imaging category at the congress of the European Society for Molecular Imaging, held from March 24 to 27, 2026, in Ljubljana, for her work entitled: “Feasibility of color K-edge imaging for assessing lung perfusion in a pulmonary embolism model in pigs using spectral photon-counting CT and gadolinium-based agent”, conducted within the ERC KOLOR SPCCT Imaging project.

This study validates the use of a nanoparticle for color K-edge diagnostic imaging of pulmonary embolism in a pig model. Color K-edge imaging is an emerging technique currently enabled in clinical settings by spectral photon-counting CT. The nanoparticle evaluated—currently under phase II clinical trials for radiosensitization of deep-seated tumors in combination with radiotherapy—was investigated for its potential in K-edge imaging due to its composition of high atomic number elements, such as gadolinium chelates (AGuIX, TherAGuIX, Lyon, France). This approach enabled specific and quantitative imaging of the pulmonary arterial lumen and lung perfusion, in comparison with conventional gadolinium chelates and iodinated contrast agents, providing both morphological and functional imaging within a single breath-hold. This proof of concept paves the way for the development of a clinical protocol for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.

Since its creation in 2005, the annual meeting of the European Society for Molecular Imaging, known as the European Molecular Imaging Meeting (EMIM), has established itself as a leading European conference dedicated to the latest advances in molecular imaging, as well as preclinical and translational imaging.

Each year, the conference brings together several hundred participants from academia, clinical practice, and industry, covering a broad range of topics from the development of molecular probes and biomarkers to innovations in imaging instrumentation and methodologies. The modalities addressed include positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), optical imaging, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as hybrid and multimodal approaches
