MUSIC: MUltiple Sclerosis and neuroInflammation, from preclinical to Clinical investigations

COORDINATORS : Françoise Durand-Dubief ;  Thomas Greneir

This project aims to improve the understanding and the follow-up of Multiple Sclerosis pathologies and involes CREATIS members (physician, clinician, image engineers) of two research teams and from all CREATIS's platforms.

During the last 4 years, this project contributes to 29 proceeding and publications with many initiated or intensified collaborations (publications/projects) as:

–International: Harvard Medical School (C. Guttmann), American University of Beirut Medical Center (Lebanon, Salem Hanoun), DEMACS (Italy, Claudio Stamile), DICEAM (Italy), Institute of Clinical Research Odenese (Denmark)
–National: Grenoble Institute of Neurosciences, Institut de Bio-Imagerie de Bordeaux, Toulouse NeuroImaging Center, Icube (A. Attye),
–Clinical centers: CERMEP, HCL, CHU Nimes,
–National MS groups : EDMUS, OFSEP

Research line 1  : MR Imaging and Spectroscopy at very High Field to study demyelination/remyelination process

The main goal of this project is to improve the understanding of the physiopathological processes in the occurrence and the evolution of demyelination, remyelination and neurodegenerative consequences in the central nervous system, as it is in MS.

The purpose of this exploratory study is to determine the longitudinal changes in demyelinating lesions over a 6-month follow up using LPC model explored at 11.7T with MR imaging and spectroscopy and anatomopathological analysis. Novel MRI/MRS sequences, based on original magnetization preparation, will be employed to image and characterize targeted short and ultra short T2 components of the myelin.  Morphologic imaging characteristics, MRI/MRS patterns of lesions and anatomopathological aspects will be analyzed.

This project relies on close collaboration between CREATIS/MUSIC and Lyon Neuroscience Research Center (CRNL/Bioran).
