2023/05: We recently edited a book with Andrew King from King's College London, UK, which includes the participation of several referent members of our scientific community. The first chapters are surrounded by a clinical introduction and opinion by an expert in the field, and followed by didactic exercises and Python tutorial. More details here.

Research

My research focuses on the characterization of diseases from medical imaging populations, in particular for cardiac imaging. I also lead several initiatives to promote engineers-cardiologists interactions and boost the value of such tools for clinicians.

On the methodological side, I develop new statistical and computational approaches to represent medical imaging populations, based on statistical atlases and machine learning. This also covers pre-processing (segmentation, tracking, and mesh/image registration) and validation (generation of synthetic databases).

On the applicative side, my work aims at better understanding disease apparition and evolution, for computer-aided diagnosis purposes. I focus on cardiac function and in particular 2D/3D myocardial shape and deformation, with widespread imaging modalities such as 2D/3D echocardiography and magnetic resonance.

[MIC-MAC] Modeling hierarchy between cardiac descriptors with machine learning
ANR ANR

ANR Young Researchers
2019-2024 (48+6 months). Funding=251k€.

Involved people:

Duchateau N (PI), Clarysse P, Viallon M, Croisille P, Freiche B (PhD student), Bernardino G (postdoc).

Overview:

Unsupervised representation learning is suited for knowledge discovery and stratifying risk among medical populations, but faces complex data integration issues. The data descriptors are numerous, high-dimensional and of heterogeneous types, and their combination is not straightforward. MIC-MAC proposes to revisit the data integration approach, by better considering hierarchy (either existing or to be learnt) in the input imaging data. The project is centered on cardiac imaging applications, and plans the retrospective exploration of large existing imaging studies of heart failure patients, from widespread imaging protocols (magnetic resonance [with CHU St Etienne, France] and echocardiography [with Hospital Clínic Barcelona, Spain]).

[MI-MIX] Multi-parametric MRI data fusion for the characterization and follow-up of myocardial infarct
FFC FFC

FFC Allocation René Foudon
2020-2023 (36+9 months). Funding=139k€.

Involved people:

Duchateau N (PI), Clarysse P, Viallon M, Croisille P, Zheng F (postdoc), Romero W (engineer).

Overview:

Cardiac imaging has a central role for myocardial infarct from diagnosis to patient management and follow-up after revascularization. Nonetheless, despite the abundance of available data, complex and essential information contained in the images are truncated or integrated in a subjective way. MI-MIX targets the analysis of multi-parametric cardiac imaging data by designing integrative tools to better understand the mechanisms of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion. It relies on computational atlases and statistical learning tools, with a strong aim at transferring them to the clinic via the design of dedicated software. The project plans the retrospective exploration of large existing magnetic resonance studies that include multi-parametric imaging of myocardial damages and regular follow-up (with CHU St Etienne, France).
